rec.food.veg World Guide to Vegetarianism
Part 1 of 5 - Canada
______________________________________________________________________
The rec.food.veg World Guide to Vegetarianism is posted around the
middle of each month. The expiration date is set for the middle of
next month, so the guide should always be available at most sites.
This guide contains a world list of vegetarian restaurants,
vegetarian-friendly restaurants, natural food stores, vegetarian
organizations, etc. The information was mostly obtained from
information provided by people who post on rec.food.veg. It is far
from complete, but nonetheless should provide useful information to
many people.
If you have any additions or corrections please e-mail them to me.
Please format any new or corrected entries in the same format as
those in the listings. Keep comments and reviews short, simple, and
straight to the point as much as possible.
If you wish to become the editor of the listings for your area,
please contact me. We are always looking for volunteers. Currently
we have the following regional co-ordinators:
Washington, DC & area: Andrea Shettle (RED_TREK@DRYCAS.CLUB.CC.CMU.edu)
Seattle & Washington state: Phil Hughes (food@fylz.com)
Vancouver, Canada: Ted Wayn Altar (altar@sfu.ca)
Montreal & Ottawa, Canada: Mark Wisdom (mwisdom@bnr.ca)
Enjoy the listings,
Mark Wisdom (mwisdom@bnr.ca)

| Fast Food Restaurants
| ---------------------
|
| Thanks to the Toronto Vegetarian Association for the following
| information.
|
| These are by no means vegetarian, they are just listed here to make
| you aware of what is, or what may soon be, available to you in fast
| food restaurants, and also what is to be avoided.
|
| You may also want to refer to the Fast Food Restaurants section at the
| start of the USA listings for an idea of what to expect at the places
| which are not listed below.
|
| Burger King
| - At this moment Burger King is selling a vegetarian Whopper, which is
| just a regular Whopper with the meat pattie removed. Beware, the bun
| may contain lard, so ask at the restaurant you are at before ordering.
| Vegans hold the mayo. This whopper is not on the menu, but they have
| a button for it on their cash registers.
| - French fries are vegan. However the onion rings may be fried
| alongside sausage patties.
|
| Dairy Queen (Brazier)
| - French fries are ok. Buns conatin animal fat.
|
| Harvey's
| - You can get a burger without the meat pattie, but with all the works,
| for $0.85. This is the newly set official price. This 'burger' is not
| on the menu, but they have a button for it on their cash registers.
| (This button is labelled 'bun'. Some employees may not know about it.)
| - All frying is done in 100% vegetable oil.
|
| KFC
| - French fries are fried in the own vats in 100% vegetable oil.
| - The breads, dressings, and desserts are vegetarian (but not vegan).
| - Vegetarian soups are offered seasonally. Check ingredients.
| - They are getting ready to launch a vegetarian battered product.
| - Head office gets a 10 out of 10 for their interest in vegetarians.
| They are recognizing us a growing consumer force.
|
| McDonalds
| - Stay away from the french fries and hash browns. They are pre-fried
| in beef tallow before they reach the store where they are refried in
| vegetable oil.
| - Their vegetarian pizza contains a derivative of hair and the sauce
| contains cheese.
| - The head office will send you a complete guide to their products if
| you call. (416) 443-1000.
|
| Mr. Submarine
| - Buns are made with 100% vegetable oil. Salad dressings may contain
| hidden animal products. The ingredients list is available at all
| stores.
|
| Olive Garden
| - Soups contain animal stock. Italian dressing contains cheese. Pasta
| is made with eggs.
|
| Subway
| - Stay away. They don't seem to want to answer our questions.
|
| Swiss Chalet
| - French fries are fried in beef tallow. Soups contain animal stock.
| Pie crust contains lard. Salad dressings may contain bacon and/or
| anchovies.
| - Gravy is vegetarian.
|
| Wendy's
| - The french fries are reportedly fried in beef tallow.
| - Baked potatoes & salad are ok.

Palo Alto
---------
Whole Food Market
- Natural foods store.
Country Sun, on California Street
- Carries many natural foods store products. GREAT bread. Deli with
hot and cold foods and a counter inside to eat at and tables outside.
Peninsula Vegetarians
284 Margarita Avenue, Palo Alto, CA 94306, (415) 493-0211 or (415) 321-4857
- Vegetarian organization.
San Diego
---------
Coastal California is pretty vegetarian friendly (which probably
won't suprise anyone). Here in San Diego, veggies are redily
accomodated at most restaurants. Also, the print media, in particular
the weekly "Reader" freebie magazine, considers vegetarians when
reviewing restaurants. When visiting an omnivore restaurant, the
reviewer will add something like "vegetarians will love all the
wonderful options" or "good selection of vegetarian entrees" in her
reviews. I've found a lot of great restaurants this way. If you drive
east, you're on your own. Lots of rednecks east of San Diego.
Vegetarian Restaurants:
Kung Food, 2949 Fifth Ave. (at Quince), Hillcrest, 298-7302.
- Kung Food is one of the best vegetarian restaurants in the world!!!
They run a natural food store/new age shop next door.
Govinda's, 3102 University (near 30th St.), North Park, 284-4826.
-Hare Krishna lacto-vegetarian restaurant.
Govinda's At The Beach, 1030 Grand Ave., Pacific Beach, 483-2500.
-Hare Krishna lacto-vegetarian restaurant.
Jyoti-Bihanga, 3351 Adams Ave., Normal Heights, 282-4116.
- Sri-Chiminoy vegetarian restaurant. Personally, my favorite, with a
Saturday morning all-you-can-eat vegetarian breakfast buffet
(7:30am-12:00pm) that is the best I've come across anywhere.
Jimbo's Pizza Naturally, 3910 30th Street, North Park, 294-9611.
- Non-dairy and macrobiotic pizza & beer. Saturday all-you-can-eat
vegetarian breakfast buffet. Also market with organic produce/grains.
House of Afrika Roots Rock Reggae Cafe, 355 North Highway 101,
Solana Beach, 259-0803.
- Excellent!!! Highly recommended, for atmosphere if nothing else.
Eat It Raw, 1163 First Street, Encinitas, 942-5945.
- Basically a juice and salad bar, not really a restaurant.
Still, worth a stop.
Mother's Kitchen, 33120 Canfield Road, Junction S6 & S7, Palomar Mountain,
742-3496.
- Quite a ways from San Diego (better part of two hours drive), but
a nice little place on a very pretty mountainside.
Mukunda's, 8008 Girard Avenue, La Jolla, 459-2213.
- Hare Krishna.
- Gone, I believe. (??)
Che Cafe, UCSD Campus, 534-2311.
- Lunch & Wednesday dinner. Pretty unreliable for most meals I've
tried there.
Paradise Valley Hospital, 2400 E. 4th, National City, 470-6311
Roxy Restaurant & Ice Cream, 517 First St., Encinitas, 436-5001
Shepherd, 1126 First St., Encinitas, 753-1124
Vegetarian friendly:
Soup Exchange, Souplantation, Soups Unlimited..., all over San Diego.
- Both Soup Exchange and Souplantation offer one or two vegetarian
soups each day. I've found Souplantation, overall, to be more
vegetarian friendly than Soup Exchange.
Sandwiched Inn, 927 Silverado, La Jolla, open 8:30-3:30.
- Friendly, and lots of vegan sandwiches.
Cafe India, 9760-5 Sports Arena Blvd...
- Great samosas, and $4.50 all-you-can-eat vegetarian lunch Tues-Sat.
Taste of Thai, 527 University Ave, Hillcrest, 291-7525
- All dishes can be made vegetarian, but watch out... they press and
flavor tofu to resemble duck meat, and it's a bit too realistic for
some of us :-)
- The service is the best of any restaurant I've been in anywhere,
and the owner is a man with a true love for the restaurant business.
My SO and I are very frequent customers of Taste of Thai, and we
recommend that anyone stopping in San Diego give them a try.
Imperial Wok, 5771 La Jolla Blvd, 454-8625.
- I've never been there, but here's a quote from their ad:
"And for our vegetarian friends... Yang's Famous Vegetarian Menu.
We use a special family recipe of exotic spices and careful
preparation to offer you delicious entrees with tastes of chicken,
beef, duck, or scallops, yet completely vegetarian."
Star of India, Prospect Ave in La Jolla.
- Expensive, but good.

- Thai.

Natural Food Stores:
Greentree Grocers, 3560 Mount Acadia Blvd., 560-1975
- Grocery store, deli, bakery, small sandwich/smoothie bar.
They actually have a remodelled restaurant that is excellent.
Prices are very reasonable, unlike the food store section.
- They have a great little restaurant right inside the store. Bright
and airy with a number of very good vegetarian selections each day.
On weekends they have a great vegetarian breakfast.

Vegetarian Restaurants:
Milly's, 4th Street, San Rafael.
- Best gourmet vegan food I've found. Small, nice atmosphere. San
Rafael is located about 15 minutes north of San Francisco on
Highway 101 (across the Golden Gate). Make the trip; it's worth
it! Popular, call for reservations. Not cheap. Nearly entirely
vegan but serve some ovo-lacto dishes.
Lotus Garden, on Grant Street, Chinatown
- Vegan. Buddhist Chinese. Excellent. Try the mu-shu "pork". Lots
of gluten and tofu dishes. The menu is awesome in length. This
is a place where locals eat their workday lunches (3 courses) for
$2.95. For a full dinner, it might run $8-$12 per person.
Greens, Fort Mason
- Well-known. Gourmet fare and a great Marina and Golden Gate view.
Popular, call for reservations.
Kowloon Restaurant, on Grant Street (?), Chinatown
- Vegan. Buddhist Chinese. Excellent gluten dishes.
Ten-Thousand Buddhas, Chinatown
- Vegetarian Chinese. 90% Vegan. Their specialty is clay pot dishes.

- Hare Krishna vegetarian restaurant.
Ananda-Fuara, 1298 Market Street, 621-1994
Vegetarian-Friendly Restaurants:
Nyala, 39 Grove Street, Civic Square
- A terrific Ethiopian restaurant right by the City Hall. Quite
possibly the best food in SF. Interesting uses of spices. They do
an interesting and varied vegetarian buffet for lunch and dinner.
It was very good, pretty cheap and filling.
Brandy Ho, on Columbus (?), North Beach area
- Not completely vegetarian, but wonderful. Many fine vegetarian
entrees. Warning, unless you have a mouth of steel, don't get any
of the hot dishes hotter than "medium". The onion cakes appetizers
are especially good.
Neecha Thia Cuisine, 2100 Sutter St, 922-9419
- No less than 37 vegetarian items on the menu. Daily specials. Open
daily from 11am-3pm & 5pm-10pm.
| Joy, Foster City
| - Chinese. Will prepare almost any entree without meat. Use a great
| tasting substitute for the meat (gluten?) Try their Singapore Curry
| Chow-mein (ask them to make it extra spicy); I've never tasted
| anything better than that!

Napi's, Provincetown
- They have quite a good menu with lots of veg selections (I seem to
remember that there are vegan selections). For the lacto-ovo crowd:
TWO THUMBS UP to a dish they call Vegetarian Steak. It's a
nut/grain/cheese thing shaped like a swiss stack and served with
vegetable gravy, potatoes and veggies. It was to DIE for.

Seva, 314 E. Liberty, 662-1111.
- Vegetarian. Excellent quality, and reasonable prices, and it is
vegan friendly too (egg and dairy clearly indicated). It is very
popular, and so reservations would be a good idea.
Almost all restaurants in Ann Arbor have substantial vegetarian
selections, and will often modify dishes to make them vegatarian.

Detroit
-------
Most restaurants in Metro Detroit are NOT vegetarian friendly;
here are some wonderful exceptions:
Vegetarian Restaurants:
Govinda's, 383 Lenox Avenue, 331-6740
-Hare Krishna vegetarian restaurant.
Pure N' Simple, 2791 Rochester Road, Troy, just north of I-75
entrance, (313) 528-0840
- Good food, big menu. Slow service, but worth the wait if you have
some time. Seventh Day Adventist. Open Sun 12-8; Mon-Thurs 11:30-8;
Fri 11:30-3; closed Saturday.
Vegetarian-Friendly Restaurants:
Inn Season, 500 E. 4th Street, downtown Royal Oak, (313) 547-7916
- Good food, almost all vegetarian except for a fish special. Very
popular; may have to wait on the sidewalk for 30 minutes during
peak hours (so dress warmly in winter).
Taste of Thailand, 2755 University Drive, Auburn Hills, close to I-75
entrance, (313) 373-4422
- Most Thai restaurants around Detroit have practically no vegetarian
entrees on the menu. Taste of Thailand offers most of its entrees
with the option of tofu. Food is superb.
Sweet Lorraine's Cafe, 29101 Greenfield, Southfield, (313) 559-5985
- Has a variety of vegetarian entrees and sandwiches on the menu.
Food is creative and tasty.
Anita's Kitchen, 110 W. Maple Road, Troy, (313) 362-0680
- Middle Eastern cuisine, with many Middle Eastern vegetarian dishes,
as well as a great veggie lasagna, and, best of all, several really
good vegetarian soups.
Good Food East, 74 W. Maple Road, Troy, (313) 362-0886
- Probably the largest health food store in Metro Detroit, with a deli
which I believe is entirely vegetarian, and a small cafe area.
Lansing
-------
Hearthstone Bakery & Vegetarian Cafe, 2003 E. Michigan, (517) 485-8600

General Health Foods, 3661 S. Maryland Parkway
- A natural foods store that serves lunch only.
Green Goddess, 953 Sahara
- It's at the back of the Rainbow's End Natural Food store.
Supposed to have a good salad bar, and has wheatless and eggless
entrees available. I quote, "Extremely accommodating chef."
Kathy's Ranch Market, Flamingo and Pecos
- Grocery store with organic food. Has an adjoining lunch type place.
The Beach Cafe(?) in the Rio Hotel, off of flamingo and I 15
- Fruit plate (large) was quite good.
Good Asian restuarants in town:

Dacau (Vietnamese) - Twain near Maryland Parkway

There are a number of Indian restuarants around town, but I've never
been impressed with any of them.
Reno
----
The Blue Heron, 1091 S. Virginia Street, 786-4110
- Vegetarian restaurant. This is a pleasant place, with a mostly
organic sort of menu. The service is so laid back as to be almost
horizontal. I think the restaurant's closed on Sundays.
Virginia street is the "main" street that most of the casinos are
on--the restaurant is a mile or so south of the casinos.
Taj Mahal Restaurant, 2255 Glendale Ave, 355-9119
- Very nice lunch buffet every day except Sunday.
Sapna Indian Restaurant, 3374 Kietzke Ln, 829-1537

New York
Albany
------
Dahlia's, 858 Madison Ave, (518) 482-0931
- Vegetarian restaurant. International gourmet including pasta pesto,
falafel, enchiladas, gado gado. Casual dining.
Ithaca
------
Thanks to Judith Underwood (under@cs.cornell.edu) for supplying the
section on Ithaca.
Generally a very good place for vegetarians. Few restaurants have
nothing vegetarian on the menu, though some Chinese places have little
more than mixed vegetables and vegetable chow mein.
Vegetarian restaurants:
ABC Cafe, 308 Stewart Ave, (607) 277-4770
- Different ethnic/theme dinner specials every night.
Cabbagetown Cafe, 404 Eddy St., (607) 273-2847
- One of the best. Mexican and middle eastern food. Vegan friendly.
Vegetarian friendly:
Aladdins Natural Eatery, 100 Dryden Road (607) 273-5000
- Middle eastern food.
Collegetown Bagels, 413 College Ave, (607) 273-9655
- Has a good salad bar, usually at least one vegetarian hot entree.
Another location at 203 N Aurora only has bagels and bagel sandwiches.
The Chariot, 420 Eddy St, (607) 273-0081
The Nines, 311 College Ave, (607) 272-1888
- Pizza etc. Chariot is very flexible about their menu -- if they can
put it together in the kitchen, they'll serve it. The Nines is run
by the same people but I have less personal experience with it.
Joe's Restaurant, 602 W Buffalo, (607) 273-2693
Little Joe's, 410 Eddy, (607) 273-2771
- Italian. Several choices of vegetarian sauces for pasta, including a
very nice pesto. LOTS of food, moderately priced, packed on weekends.
Just a Taste, 116 N Aurora, (607) 277-9463
- Wine and tapas bar. Many options for tapas (appetizer sized dishes
-- make a meal from two or three), fewer for entrees. Good spinach
salad.
Moosewood, Dewitt Mall, (607) 273-9610
- Of the Moosewood cookbooks fame. Not in the vegetarian restaurant
category because they serve fish. Overrated in my opinion --
Cabbagetown is better and cheaper.

Oneonta
-------
In the "small" town of Oneonta there are about 20 pizza joints where
you have no problem ordering pizza sans cheese.
They have one restaurant that (used to be exclusively) serves vegetarian
and vegan meals (I had scrambled tofu w/whole wheat toast and home fries
for breakfast the other day). This place is ALWAYS packed.
There are restaurants that cater to a vegetarian clientelle, and rarely
look askance when you ask for something sans meat or query them about
the soup stock, etc. I was at one place a few weeks ago and happen to be
an acquaintance of the manager. I told him that the dinner menu needed
more vegetarian, low-fat (not cheese laden) meals. The salad bar is
excellent there, so at least that's something. He said they tried a
veggie burger at lunch, and it was wildly successful, so they are going
to add things to their dinner menu as well.
Rochester
---------
BTB (Blessed Thistle Bakery), 1?? University Avenue
- Vegetarian. Has a small cafe that is pretty good. The bread is
excellent!
Aladdin's, on Monroe
- Middle-Eastern. Falafel, etc.
Oscar's, Monroe Ave. near Goodman
- Though the last time I recommended this place, they had a Hepatitis alert!!
Hong Kong, on Alexander St. between Park and East
- Will make almost any dish vegetarian. Moo Shu No-Pork is very good.
Chinese Vegetable with Garlic Sauce is my all time favorite.
Alexi's, on Monroe near Aladdin's
- Excellent Veg Pizza and Pasta.
Alvin Ord's, on Monroe across from Aladdin's
- Excellent Veg Sandwich. Tofu burgers.
Big Apple, Park Ave. btwn Culver & Berkley
- Some excellent veg dishes. Great atmosphere, a little expensive.
Thai Taste, Mt. Hope plaza
- _Cheap_ food. They'll do most of their dishes vegetarian on request.
Raj Mahal, corner of Monroe and Alexander
Wildseeds Bookstore and Cafe, 7?? University Avenue
- Not a huge selection but pretty good.
Hmm. I wonder if the Dunkin' Donuts in Brighton, NY (Rochester, NY)
does things in a special way? They're certified kosher.

Syracuse
--------
It has been extremely frustrating trying to eat vegetarian in Syracuse.
Eeating out is a real problem. I am not all that crazy about salad
and I have been actually lectured by people when I ask for things that
are not specifically on the menu. The two mexican joints I have tried
both appear to put bacon in their beans. It is REALLY difficult to find
Italian foods here that are not laden with cheese and/or meat.

Kalachandji's, 5430 Gurley Ave, 827-6330
- Hare Krishna lacto-vegetarian restaurant. They serve an all-you-can-
eat buffet twice a day. Dinner's ~$8, lunch is cheaper. BTW:
Kalachandji's is a favorite with visiting veggy musicians, many of
whom have left autographed pictures and letters of recommendation
to be displayed in the lobby. Among them are Crissie Hynde(sp?),
Annie Lennox, and the B-52's.
Paisley Palace, 6106 Luther Lane at Preston, 368-2456
- Really good veggy-Indian cuisine. Too bad the atmosphere is, well,
absent; it has all the ambience of a sub shop. You might try it at
lunch, when atmosphere isn't as important.
Phil`s Cafe, 2815 Elm Street, 761-8400
- Not strictly veggy, but close. Basically Tex-Mex, with lots of
interesting items like black bean nachos, and spinach enchilladas.
Good budget food. Open late.

Washington
Many thanks to Phil Hughes for co-ordinating the section on
Washington state.
Bellevue
--------
Raga, 556 108th Ave NE, Bellevue, 450-0336
- Very impressive. If you like good Indian food, it's worth a trip to
Bellevue to check this place out. There is a nice vegetarian section
on the menu. Dinner is order-off-the-menu, the mostly vegetarian
all-you-can-eat lunch buffet is $6.95, and well worth it.
The Twelve Baskets, 201 106th NE, 455-3684
- "Health food" restaurant that has grown up into a fair sized
vegetarian restaurant.
Everett
-------
The India Palace, 1405 Hewitt Avenue, 252-8543
- Lunch and dinner 7-days a week. All you can eat buffet lunch is
$5.95 and available on weekends too.
Glacier
-------
There is a WONDERFUL little place that I can't remember the name of,
almost entirely veggie. Its about a mile out of glacier (the foot of
Mt. Baker) right on the "highway". It's very small. On weekend
evenings you will NOT get in without a reservation.
The italian restaurant right in Glacier is incredible, too.
Terrific veggie lasagna and run by super people.
Seattle
-------
The Seattle area has a fair number of vegetarians, and is a pretty
good place for vegetarians to live. There is Puget Consumer Coop,
a natural food coop with 5 area stores (most of which are full
supermarket size). There are several good all-vegetarian
restaurants, many restaurants that have at least a few vegetarian
dishes, and most of those that don't are very accommodating about
whipping up something special.
Public transit is really decent in Seattle and free in the core of
downtown. Off peak bus service to other places (like the U-district)
is $.75, $1.00 at peak times and you can get a transfer good for 2
hours.
Vegetarian Restaurants:
Bamboo Garden, 364 Roy Street (Queen Anne area), 282-6616
- They are a kosher vegan Chinese restaurant (really!)
They have vegan "meat" dishes.
Blue Planet, 2208 North 45th, 632-0750
- Organic multicultural cuisine and a juice bar.
Cafe Flora, E. Madison St. (in the heart of the Madison Valley).
- Stay away if things yuppie make you ill, but if you enjoy artsy
food, no alcohol and a pleasant environment that just happens to be
vegetarian, this is a nice place. Entrees run around 6.95 to 9.95;
portions are good, some vegan options. Like I said, if you think
that nice interior decoration is yuppie, stay away. Also, Cafe Flora
is doing *a lot* of business: early evening is always very busy.
Five Loaves Deli, 2719 E Madison (Madison Park area), 726-7989
- Vegan. A Seventh Day Adventist bakery and deli. Great Sunday brunch.
Closed Friday and Saturday.
Flowers, 42nd and University (University District)
- An ex-flower shop that is now a vegetarian restaurant with a bar.
Many choices are vegan. Excellent lunch buffet with pasta
(containing eggs) being the only non-vegan choices.
Globe Cafe, 1531 14th Avenue, 324-8815
- Simple vegan food, really good baked items, latte with soy milk.
Funky atmosphere; worker owned.
Gravity Bar, 2 locations:
415 Broadway E, (Capitol Hill), 325-7186
113 Virginia, (near Pike Place Public Market), 448-8826
- To quote their menu, "modern food". All sorts of rather strange dishes
and lots of fresh fruit and veggie drinks. Maybe more yuppified than
some places, but certainly good juice bar with some meal items also.
Honey Bear Bakery, 56th and Meridian
- Good bakery with a few lunch choices that are all vegetarian.
Mid City Cafe 401 Yale Ave North Phone: 623-7979
- Lacto-vegetarian
Morningtown Cafe, 41st and Roosevelt
- Very counterculture. *Very* informal, but good value and good food.
Used to be a collective. They even have dairy-free pizza.
Silence Heart-Nest Restaurant, 5247 University Way NE, U-district
- All vegetarian Indian food. Lots of vegan items. Sri Chinmoy fans
usual stuff.
Sunlight Cafe, 64th and Roosevelt
- Seattle's oldest real vegetarian restaurant. Most things have
dairy. They also have additive free beer and wine.
Vegetarian-Friendly Restaurants:
Ali Baba's, 707 E. Pine
- One of Seattle's good Middle-Eastern restaurants.
Axum, 42nd & Brooklyn in the U-district
- Good Ethiopian food with reasonable vegetarian choices.
Azteca restaurants (locations throught the greater Seattle area)
- Now serve a non-fat bean dish as an option instead of
their refried beans, and they claim the beans are vegetarian.
You can have these non-fat beans in any of their dishes that
contains beans.
Cafe Haney, 5327 Ballard Avenue
- Wonderful vegetarian (ovo-lacto) selections: their vegetable
pot-pie is amazing, and their Saturday and Sunday breakfast menu has
a few selections (such as the eggs florentine) that shouldn't be missed.
Cafe Loc, 2 locations:
407 Broad (near Seattle Center)
Food Circus at Seattle Center
- Inexpensive good Vietnamese entrees. Lots of vegetarian stuff.
Cafe Long 12517 Lake City Way NE in Lake City
- Good assortment of cheap Vietnamese food, a large percentage
of which are vegetarian.
College Inn Pub, 4006 University Way NE.
- Veggie burger, vegetarian burrito, sometimes lentil soup
(one of the cooks is vegetarian).
Grand Palace, 417 2nd Avenue
- Thai restaurant. Curried vegetables and tofu. Noodles and vegetable
soup.
Julia's, two locations:
in Wallingford, 1714 N 44th, (Wallingford)
Park Place, 5410 Ballard Ave NW, (Ballard)
- Wallingford is probably the better choice for veggie choices.
A mid-priced restaurant with beer and wine. Not hippie, not
formal, just all around pleasant.
King's Chinese Restaurant, 15th NE and Lake City Way (maple leaf area)
- Now Chinese and Thai with lots of vegetarian choices. Healthy: no
MSG, brown rice available.
Little Thai, 4142 Brooklyn Ave NE (On 42nd NE, between University Way
and Brooklyn in the old church building)
- Seafood and vegetarian Thai food. Very good. Lots of vegan choices.
Vegetarian (vegan) lunch for $3.75.
New Orleans Restaurant, 81 Yesler Way, Pioneer Square, 622-2563
- Here's something different for the Pacific Northwest - Creole food.
Gumbo is a delicious okra soup and the New Orleans Restaurant has a
vegetarian variety. They also make a vegetarian eggplant dish.
Panchito's, 1st and Cherry, Pioneer Square
- Mexican restaurant. Lardless refried beans, burritos and tacos.
Panko's, 4850 Greenlake Way (south of Greenlake)
- A "stir-fry" sort of place with reasonable vegetarian choices
including tofu tomato curry chow mein.
Poco Loco, 45xx University Way (in the Ave Arcade)
- A fast food window with a counter inside. Monster vegetarian burritos
(beans, rice, tomato, avocado, cheeze) for $3.00, other vegetarian
choices.
Red Robin Burger and Spirits Emporiums (various Seattle locations)
- Meatless burger, veggie primavera, meat-free salad choices.
(I was told -- by a Red Robin employee -- that the veggie burger
is excellent and a great seller.)
Sound View Cafe, Pike Place Market
- A fresh food cafe (ingredients come from the market itself) with
lots of vegetarian choices.
Still Life Coffeehouse in Fremont, 709 N 35th.
- They ususally have at least one vegetarian soup du jour plus salads,
good desserts, and a great veggie submarine sandwich.
Triangle Tavern, 3507 Fremont Place (Fremont)
- They have vegetarian dishes on their menu including a middle eastern
appetizer plate, vegetarian sandwich, vegetarian lasagne and
lots of micro-brew beers on tap. Often their soup de jour is
vegetarian.
There are lots of restaurants offering vegetarian choices on
University Way between 42nd and 52nd. Many have menues in the window.
Park and take a stroll.
Natural Food Stores:
Puget Consumer Coop, 5 locations
- A natural food coop. Most are full supermarket size.
Central Coop, 1835 12th, (Capitol Hill)
- Feels more like a real co-op, as opposed to PCC which is more like
a supermarket

Germany
______________________________________________________________________
Germany has a chain of natural food stores called "Reformhaus". This
chain is not recommended though because the food is expensive and not
"biological" (i.e. comes from 'normal' farmers), and there's always a
waste of packing material. A better chain would be "Bio-Laden", but
they too are expensive.
There is a pure vegetarian restaurant in both Hamburg and Berlin,
however I have no information whatsoever on them at the moment.

Vegetarian guides are sold everywhere. ex: "Vegetarian Guide to the

There are several nationally-circulated vegetarian-oriented magazines
available in any big newsagents that have pages and pages of small
ads.
Wimpy, Burger King, and just about every restaurant chain in the UK
except for McDonalds serves a bean burger at its stores in the UK.
Also, most main-line railway stations have a "Casey Jones" burger
shop in them, selling "Mexican Bean Burgers", which are much the same
thing again.

The one on Drummond Street is a 2 minute walk from Euston railway
station.
Chutneys, 124 Drummond Street, London NW1

The lunchtime buffets are extremely good and cheap at #3.95 plus
drinks (if required). I think 'lunchtime' extends quite late into

A restaurant is likely to be vegetarian if it has a Hindu name.
Any restaurant labelled "military" is not vegetarian.
If the restaurant name contains one of these words: udupi, ganesh,
mahal, vilas, ramakrishna, chandra, or bhavan, then it is probably
vegetarian.

The following is more or less taken from an article in Vegetarian Times
written by Wayne Caravella.
There is always an abundant supply of fresh tropical fruits, but if you
really want to eat at a restaurant, expect the following conversation:
You: "I am orang-vegetarian (vegetarian). I do not eat any daging
(meat), ikan (fish), ayam (chicken), or telur (eggs)."
Waiter: "How about nasi goreng (a traditional Indonesian dish of fried
rice with chicken)?"
You: Knowing where this is heading, you switch to plan B. "I would
like to order a plate of sayur direbus (plain boiled vegetables)
and nasi putih (plain boiled rice). No terasi (shrimp paste), no
ajinomoto (MSG), and no oil (they always use too much coconut
oil). Just plain vegetables cooked in water, not fried."
After a short while you are served plain white rice and a bowl of
vegetables in a clear, oily, salty broth, probably chicken broth with
MSG. Eat only the rice and switch to plan C, which will be successful.
Plan C consists of feigning slight illness. Ethical? Maybe. Logical?
Well, it works. If you choose plan C, you can (to suit your individual
preferences) later order specific local condiments that will liven up
your otherwise bland meal, such as gado-gado (spicy peanut sauce), and
tempeh, which is often often served deep-fried and crispy for dipping
in the gado-gado. Also you can order chop chai tidak telur, tidak ayam
- fried rice and vegetable stir-fry; no egg, no chicken. Be careful
however because the local tempeh, although very tasty, may be full of
small stones.
